Floresta amazônica: fonte ou sumidouro de carbono?
Três parcelas de um hectare cada instaladas no coração da Amazônia teimam em contrariar o que andam escrevendo e falando sobre o papel da floresta amazônica na ciclagem do carbono. Nos últimos 34 anos, elas têm acumulado carbono, numa ordem de 700 a 900 Kg/ha/ano ou 2,5 a 3,3 tCO2eq./ha/ano. Não é pouco e não pode ser negligenciado. Verdade de campo raiz.
Essa é uma dimensão importante para a pesquisa científica, que tem que ser completada com outras duas dimensões: estatística e machine learning. Essas parcelas estão instaladas na base de manejo florestal do INPA, na reserva conhecida como ZF2, a 90 Km a noroeste de Manaus.

Three one-hectare sample plots installed in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon have persisted in opposing to what have been written and spoken, recently, about the role of the Amazonian forests in terms of carbon cycling. During the last 34 years, they have accumulated between 700 to 900 Kg/ha/year or 2.5 to 3.3 tCO2eq. per year. Quite a lot and could not been neglected. Ground truth classic.
This is an important dimension of the science, which must be completed with the other two dimensions: statistics and machine learning. These sample plots are installed in the forest management site of INPA known as ZF2, some 90 Km northwesterly of Manaus, Amazonas State.
